Strengthening Regional Action on Nature-based Solutions to Deliver the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
To help achieve KMGBF targets, regional governments should:
- Build institutional capacity – Equip agencies to design, finance, and implement NbS.
- Identify bankable projects – Assess which NbS have revenue potential and where public investment or incentives are needed.
- Strengthen partnerships – Collaborate with scientific institutions, the private sector, and insurers to integrate NbS into planning and risk reduction.
- Localise solutions – Use native species, local expertise, and Indigenous Peoples’ and Local Communities’ (IPLCs) knowledge.
- Prioritise prevention – Focus on ex-ante risk reduction through ecosystem restoration.
- Use existing guidance – Apply the IUCN Global Standard for NbS and frameworks such as UNEP’s “State of Finance for Nature” to support implementation.
